Before we discuss what causes low blood pressure, we’d like to give you some brief information about the blood pressure, including the measurements and the normal blood pressure number.
What causes low blood pressure – what is blood pressure?
Blood pressure has two numbers used, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. The systolic pressure is represented in the first or top number, while the diastolic pressure is represented in the second or bottom number.
The diastolic pressure is basically the amount of pressure in arteries when heart is at rest between beats. On the other hands, the systolic pressure is the amount of pressure generated by your heart when pumping blood.
What causes low blood pressure – normal blood pressure
So what is normal blood pressure? Well, it is commonly agreed today that the normal blood pressure should be 120/80 max. But then again, the blood pressure number can change at any given time. There are a lot of factors that can affect your blood pressure number, such as medications, time of the day, etc.
What causes low blood pressure – diagnosis
Generally, it is believed that you are experiencing low blood pressure when your diastolic pressure is lower than 60 OR systolic pressure is lower than 90. That being said, sometimes there are some people who have lower blood pressure than other people, and they are fine with it.
What I’m trying to say is, it is generally believed that you have low blood pressure conditions when you got the proper symptoms. Some low blood pressure symptoms can include dizziness and fainting feeling.

Aside of the common low blood pressure causes such as medical conditions (see the what causes low blood pressure – medical causes), low blood pressure causes can also include your medications, such as pills etc.
Below are medication things what causes low blood pressure:
- Alpha blockers
- Beta blockers
- Sildenafil (Viagra), when combined with nitroglycerine
- Diuretics (water pills)
- Certain types of antidepressants (tricyclic antidepressants)
- Drugs for Parkinson’s disease
