Barium enema is also commonly known as lower gastrointestinal series. This colon cancer screening test is a special X-Ray that utilize one particular chemical called barium sulfate and air. Air may be pumped into the colon to help sharpen the outline of the intestinal wall. The combination of barium sulfate and air allows the x-ray to outline the lining of the rectum and colon clearly. This is possible since the barium sulfate shows up as white color on X-ray films.

Just like colonoscopy, doctors use the flexible sigmoidoscopy to screen the colon cancer and also to look for and remove adenomas and polyps, which could lead to colon cancer.

Colon Cancer Tests – Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Procedure

Usually, you will be asked to prepare yourself two days before the test by your doctor or nurse. Common preparations for this colon cancer tests  includes taking laxatives and possibly a special diet. This preparation will clean your colon from stools, enabling doctors to see clearly during the colon cancer tests.

Patients has two options, he/she can choose to be sedated during the test being or not.There are many people do the test without any sedative. The test takes about 10-20 minutes.

Within the colon cancer tests, a thin tube will be inserted into your rectum and into the first two feet (half) of your colon.
