PAC spends 2.3M on State House candidates
KALAMAZOO -- A political-action committee financed largely by Kalamazoo billionaire Jon Stryker raised $3 million during the latest three-month reporting period, according to disclosure statements filed Monday with the state.
Stryker's Coalition for Progress spent $213,626 during the three-month period ending Oct. 20 on television advertisements and mailings for Julie M. Rogers, the Democrat running against Republican Larry DeShazor in the state House's 61st District.
The political-action committee spent a total of $2.3 million, which in addition to Rogers' race, included money to advertise 11 other state House candidates in other parts of the state.
The effort is a continuation of Stryker's political spending.
In 2006, he contributed millions of dollars to state House races and some experts gave Stryker at least partial credit for the Democrats gaining control of the House.
"Obviously, anytime anybody puts resources into advertising, it's going to help,'' said Brian Johnson, Rogers' campaign manager, on whether the coalition will make an impact in her race.
Overall, Stryker's committee has raised more than $4.24 million during the current election cycle.
