Michigan's Coalition for Progress Commends the House of Representatives for Standing Up for Patients
Kalamazoo, Michigan – Today, the Michigan Coalition for Progress applauded the Michigan legislature for revoking prior legislation that shielded pharmaceutical companies from liability if their products harmed or took the life of Michigan residents. The Coalition for Progress strongly advocated for this legislation in the previous legislative elections through television and radio ads.
"Today is a huge victory for Michigan families," said Kerry Ebersole, Michigan's Coalition for Progress executive director. "For over a decade, patients here didn't have any recourse if they were harmed or killed by pharmaceutical products. During the last election cycle, Michigan's Coalition for Progress called on political leaders to change this disturbing law, and now members of Michigan's House of Representatives have responded by standing up to the big special interests and giving patients a voice. We look forward to the day when Governor Granholm signs this legislation, helping to move Michigan forward."
The legislation passed by the Michigan House repealed a 1996 law that provided immunity to drug companies when their products harmed or resulted in the death of Michigan's residents. Today's repeal will be retroactive to 1996.
