Colon Cancer Symptoms Explained Part 5: Thin Stools

Today we’re going to discuss about thin stools, one of the common colon cancer symptoms. Sometimes people have constipation thin stools, sometimes it’s just skinny stool.. It is actually pretty common for people for having thin stools. In most cases, it is nothing serious and can be ignored. However, if you are having a thin stools and also a change in the bowel movements such as diarrhea or constipation for over a week, it could be a symptoms for something serious such as colon cancer.
As I explained before, there are many factors that can contribute to the bowel movement changes, such as changes in diet and exercise routine, traveling, medication or dietary supplements.
Thin stools as a Colon Cancer Symptoms
As we have explained earlier, you might want to see your doctor if you’re having thin stools for more than two weeks and it is also accompanied by other symptoms. The reason? Your thin stool might be one of a the colon cancer symptoms. But in most cases it’s something less serious.
As the stool went through the colon, it starts from thick liquid and ended up thicker and more solid, thanks to the colon which absorbed the water out of it. This solid stools’ flexibility is reduced, making it harder to get around the blockage. If you have a tumor in the middle to lower portions of the colon, or in the rectum, it can be difficult for stool to pass by. In order for the stool to pass, it is squeezed into a thinner, longer form, sometimes referred to as pencil stools. In this way, the thin, long stool can be an indication that the area through which it must pass to exit the body is smaller than it should be, hinting at the possibility of a tumor or other blockage.
When to see Doctor
If you have a thin/pencil stools, you might want to make an appointment with your doctor when
- You see blood in your stool
- It’s been three or more days since the last time you waste your stools
- You are having a bowel movement changes such as diarrhea or constipation
- You’ve had thin stools for two or more weeks. (entirely or off-on)
- You feel persistent cramps, chronic abdominal or rectal pain and/or bloating
- You’re vomiting for longer than a day or two
